Transition to high school
Starting high school is a significant milestone for students and their families. At Galston High School, we understand that the move from Year 6 to Year 7 brings exciting opportunities, experiences and important changes as students begin an exciting new chapter. Our comprehensive transition program is designed to help students feel supported, confident and prepared for a successful start to high school.
Our transition program
To provide a smooth transition, we work closely with all primary schools to gather information about each student’s educational, social and wellbeing needs. Our Head Teacher Welfare & Learning and Support (Mr Jake van Baarle), Student Support Officer (Mr Lachlan Gage), Year 7 Adviser (Year 7 2027 Ms Lara Somerville) and Learning and Support Team ensure appropriate supports are in place before students begin Year 7. Below is an overview of the transition program delivered throughout Terms 3 & 4.
In Term 3, Galston High School begins the transition process through the exchange of information with local primary schools. This allows us to gain valuable insights into each student's academic progress, social development and wellbeing needs.
Throughout Term 3, the Head Teacher of Welfare & Learning and Support (Mr Jake van Baarle) and Student Support Officer (Mr Lachlan Gage) and Year 7 2027 Adviser (Ms Lara Somerville) meet with the Learning and Support team and Year 6 classroom teachers from our major feeder primary schools. These meetings help us develop a clear understanding of each student’s strengths and any areas where additional support may be beneficial.
At the beginning of Term 4, the Learning and Support Team coordinates meetings for students who require additional support. Through our inclusive education programs and personalised learning plans students are well supported before commencing high school. Hub Staff will contact relevant families directly to arrange meeting times and exchange of information.
During Term 4, Our Head Teacher of Welfare & Learning and Support (Mr Jake van Baarle), Student Support Officer (Mr Lachlan Gage), Year 7 2027 Adviser (Ms Lara Somerville) visit our major feeder primary schools for a “Meet and Greet” session. These visits provide Year 6 students with the opportunity to become familiar with key staff members and ask questions about life at Galston High School.
Orientation Day gives students the chance to experience life at Galston High School before starting Year 7. Students will explore the school, participate in engaging activities and meet new peers. It’s a fun opportunity to build confidence and prepare for the exciting transition to high school. This also gives the students the first taste of how a small school can present BIG opportunities!

Getting ready at home
